Choose Your Path to Success
NATE Certification represents real-world working knowledge of HVACR systems and validates the professional competency of service and installation technicians. Designed for professional technicians with at least two years of experience, the certification exams consist of questions created by industry experts from across the country.
NATE offers two certification pathways for technicians to choose from to earn NATE Certification: the Traditional pathway or the Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) pathway.
With the Traditional Pathway, technicians take the NATE core exam and a Specialty exam. Technicians can choose from multiple Specialty exam options.
With the Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) Pathway, technicians earn their NATE certification through a series of five exams, each on a different subject domain: HVAC Fundamentals, Electrical and Controls, Comfort and Airflow, Installation, and Service. NATE designed the CHP-5 to mirror a technician’s on-the-job training.
Technicians must pass all exams in their chosen certification pathway to become NATE Certified.
Recertification
Once certified, technicians must maintain their certification by earning 18 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) every two years or retaking their Specialty Exam. Visit our Recertification Page to learn more.
