2014 NATE Certification Changes

With increasing demand on technicians’ personal and professional time, NATE has made changes to its certification program in order to continue its value to HVACR. Based on industry feedback, these changes are designed to make it simpler for technicians to maintain NATE certification with better recognition of the HVACR industry training and lowered certification maintenance costs.

Grace Period

Expired Certification(s)

After 60 days of from date of expiration technician must take both NATE Core and specialty exams

After 120 days from certification expiration technicians must take both NATE Core and specialty exams

If NATE certification was earned or recertified prior to January 2014, the current certification(s) will complete the previously awarded five-year duration. This includes those who successfully passed the NATE Core exam and at least one specialty exam in 2013, regardless of the exam processing date. Upon the maintenance date, the technician will automatically transition to the 2-year certification period.

*If NATE certifications expire in 2014 and 60 hours of CEH are earned, the technician has the option to maintain certification for a 5-year certification period for $95 or to transition to the new 2-year certification period for $25. If the technician chooses the 5-year certification period, upon the maintenance date in 2019, the technician will automatically transition to the 2-year certification period.
